72 HOURS Movie Review: Thrilling Survival Drama

Joe (Kevin Hart) is a 40-year-old advertising executive staring down the barrel of obsolescence. His agency is pivoting to younger talent, and his next big client - a sneaker brand - demands a campaign that “speaks to the streets.” Desperate, Joe is accidentally added to a group chat for a bachelor party organized by Nick (Marcello Hernández), a loud, loyal twentysomething whose brother Mason (Mason Gooding) is about to get married. The crew includes Freshman (Kam Patterson), an impulsive wild card; Hunter (Ben Marshall), an eager-to-please rich kid; Barry (Zach Cherry), the gruff but soft-hearted older cousin; and Jaze (Michael Mando), the mysterious groom-to-be who barely speaks. Mistaking Joe for a long-lost friend, the group drags him along to Miami for 72 hours of debauchery, and Joe - seeing a chance to mine real-world “street” cred for his ad campaign - tags along. What follows is a predictable clash of generations, a few hangovers, and a reluctant bonding session.

Tim Story knows his lane. The director of Ride Along and the Fantastic Four reboot (the 2015 one, for better or worse) treats 72 HOURS as a straight road-trip comedy with a single gimmick: an old guy among Zoomers. The script, credited to a trio of first-time feature writers, leans heavily on Hart’s ability to sell a one-liner. And sell he does - his Joe is a walking anxiety attack, scanning every group text for signs of relevance while mispronouncing slang and fumbling with TikTok trends. Hart’s timing remains impeccable, and the physical comedy (a botched jet-ski scene is a highlight) lands harder than the dialogue.

The supporting cast is the film’s secret weapon. Marcello Hernández, fresh from Saturday Night Live, brings a manic sweetness to Nick, the party’s emotional anchor. Mason Gooding plays Mason with just enough sincerity to make you care about his engagement. Kam Patterson steals scenes as Freshman, a chaos agent whose every decision is both idiotic and heartfelt. Zach Cherry, as the grumpy Barry, provides the film’s few moments of genuine pathos - a quiet scene where he confesses he’s never been to a beach is surprisingly affecting.

Where 72 HOURS falters is its unwillingness to commit to either satire or sentiment. The “old guy learns from young people” arc has been done better in The Intern or 21 Jump Street. The script keeps threatening to explode into a commentary on generational anxiety, but instead settles for dick jokes and a gross-out scene involving a blender and a fish. The Miami setting is underused - we get a nightclub, a beach, a strip club, and little else. Teyana Taylor, as Joe’s disapproving boss Jennifer, is wasted in a role that only exists to pop up for video calls. Michael Mando’s Jaze is given a dramatic backstory (he’s a former soldier who wants a quiet wedding) that feels shoehorned into the final act.

The 102-minute runtime works in its favor. The film doesn’t overstay, but it also never builds momentum. Scenes end just as they start to feel comfortable, and the third-act “everything falls apart then comes back together” sequence is mechanical. Still, there are laughs. A bit where Joe tries to explain NFTs to the crew while they roast him is sharp. The bachelor party game where everyone has to drink every time someone says “vibe” is a meta wink that lands.

Pros:

• Kevin Hart delivers his best comedic performance since The Man from Toronto, firing on all cylinders physically and verbally.
• The ensemble cast has genuine chemistry and distinct personalities - Hernández and Patterson are standouts.
• Pacing is tight: at 102 minutes, the film never drags.
• A handful of legitimately funny set pieces, especially the jet-ski sequence and a karaoke standoff.
• The generational humor avoids outright mean-spiritedness; it’s playful, not cruel.

Cons:

• The plot is entirely predictable, beat for beat, from “old man can’t keep up” to “old man saves the day.”
• Emotional beats feel manufactured and shallow - the father-son subplot is barely sketched.
• Teyana Taylor and Michael Mando are severely underused.
• The comedy relies too heavily on cringe moments that don’t always pay off.
• Miami’s vibrant setting is reduced to generic party backdrops.

72 HOURS is not Tim Story’s best comedy, nor Kevin Hart’s, but it is an amiable time-waster that knows exactly what it is. The premise - a 40-year-old crashing a Gen Z bachelor party - is a solid springboard, and the film gets enough mileage out of Hart’s energy and a likable supporting cast to justify a lazy Saturday stream. It’s too safe to be memorable, too funny to be a total miss. If you’re looking for a low-stakes laugh, you could do worse. But if you want a comedy that actually has something to say about aging, relevance, or friendship, you’ll leave this party feeling a little empty.
