Netflix will bring a brutal tale of calculated revenge to its subscribers before the year is out, with the prison action thriller Riot confirmed for a late-2026 premiere on the streaming platform. The film, which first released in 2015, pairs Matthew Reese with action icon Dolph Lundgren in a story that swaps the usual prison-break formula for a deliberate prison entry - one engineered by a man with nothing left to lose.
Directed by John Lyde, Riot runs a tight 88 minutes and lands on Netflix with a modest critical history behind it: a 5.6/10 user rating on TMDb and a 5.1/10 on IMDb. Those numbers suggest a divisive reception, but they hardly tell the whole story of a movie built around a premise that genre fans tend to find irresistible.
A Robbery With a Purpose
The setup is as lean as it is unusual. Reese plays Copper Jack Stone, a man who intentionally carries out a bank robbery so that he will be sent to prison - not to serve his time quietly, but to reach a specific inmate. That target is Balam, a notorious Russian kingpin played by former MMA fighter Chuck Liddell. Balam is no ordinary mobster serving out a sentence. He is a cunning and deeply dangerous lord who effectively controls the police force from behind bars, treating his incarceration as a cover for his real position: King of the city.
According to the film's official overview, Balam's power is made concrete in the very architecture of the prison. His cell is a lavish private room constructed specifically for him, tucked deep within the prison structure and inaccessible to nearly everyone. Even the warden is afraid to set foot in Balam's section of the facility. Surrounded by loyal henchmen and guards, he presides over a fortress within a fortress - untouchable, or so he believes.
What Balam does not know is that Jack is coming for him. Jack's motive is vengeance: Balam murdered his family in cold blood. The overview sums up the confrontation with a simple, blunt promise - Balam is tough, but Jack is tougher.
A Cast Built for a Brawl
The ensemble leans heavily on performers with action credentials. Dolph Lundgren appears as William, while Liddell - a UFC Hall of Famer - takes on the role of the fearsome Balam. Danielle Chuchran plays Alena, and the supporting cast includes Michael Flynn as District Attorney Johnson, Renny Grames as Trisha Sinclair, Eve Mauro as Allison, and Melanie Stone as Kat. For audiences who follow independent action cinema, the pairing of Reese and Lundgren gives the film a recognizable, physical center, while Liddell's casting as the villain plays directly to his real-world fighting reputation.
A Streaming Home Years After Release
Riot arrives on Netflix roughly eleven years after its original September 27, 2015 release date. That gap is not unusual for the platform, which frequently licenses completed action titles and introduces them to subscribers who may have missed them during their initial run. For Netflix's action audience - a group that reliably gravitates toward revenge narratives and confined-location thrillers - the film's core hook is straightforward: a single man walks willingly into an enemy's stronghold with no apparent exit strategy.
The genre listing is simply Action, and the original language is English. There is no word yet on whether the Netflix debut will be accompanied by additional marketing or a renewed cast reunion, and the platform has not indicated any plans beyond the late-2026 window.
What the film does offer is a clean, high-concept engine. Jack's scheme depends on the audience accepting that prison is the one place Balam cannot be reached - except by someone willing to be imprisoned alongside him. That inversion, plus a villain whose authority extends past the cellblock and into the police department itself, gives Riot a sharper edge than its middling ratings might imply.
For viewers who appreciate a stripped-down revenge story with a martial-arts pedigree, the film's streaming premiere later this year will be the first easy chance to judge whether Jack Stone's gamble pays off.
