Quick Verdict

A deeply misguided sequel that squanders a talented cast on a script that feels like it was assembled from discarded sketch ideas and reheated rom-com tropes. Seriously Single Too is neither seriously funny nor romantically compelling - it's just seriously disappointing.

Story

The premise is deceptively simple: Dineo and Noni, two best friends who have long navigated Johannesburg's party scene as a united front, suddenly find their dynamic shattered when Noni's boyfriend drops to one knee and proposes on the spot. For Noni, it's a fairy-tale moment. For Dineo, it's the beginning of the end - the loss of her partner-in-crime, her wingwoman, her entire social identity.

What follows should be a sharp, emotionally honest exploration of female friendship, changing life stages, and the quiet terror of being left behind. Instead, the film lurches from one contrived set piece to another, introducing a revolving door of suitors, misunderstandings, and supposedly wacky complications that build to absolutely nothing. The screenplay, credited to a team that surely should have known better, strands its characters in a narrative that's simultaneously overstuffed and underdeveloped. Subplots appear, linger awkwardly, and vanish without resolution. Dineo's career ambitions get lip service; Noni's doubts about marriage are telegraphed then abandoned. By the time the inevitable third-act reconciliation arrives, it's hard to remember what, exactly, anyone was fighting about.

Review

Let's start with what works. Fulu Modibedi and Tumi Morake are genuinely charismatic performers, and in a better film their chemistry would be the engine of something special. Modibedi has a gift for comic timing that survives even the clunkiest dialogue, while Morake brings a warmth and groundedness that suggests depths the script never bothers to explore. The supporting cast - including Buntu Petse, Keke Mphuthi, and the always-welcome Harriet Manamela - mostly acquit themselves honorably, which only makes the material's deficiencies more glaring.

Because here's the thing: Seriously Single Too isn't just unfunny. It's aggressively unfunny, in the way that only a comedy confident in its own cleverness can be. Jokes land with the thud of a dropped piano. Physical comedy sequences are staged with all the grace of a traffic accident. And the film's attempts at emotional sincerity - the tearful confessions, the meaningful glances, the musical montages - feel unearned, as if the movie assumes our investment in these characters rather than building it.

The production values are serviceable enough. The Johannesburg locations are glossy, the soundtrack is aggressively pleasant, and the cinematography does what it can to make the proceedings look more expensive than they likely were. But polish can't paper over a fundamentally broken foundation. The pacing is erratic, with scenes that drag interminably followed by rushed resolutions. The editing feels choppy, as if substantial chunks of exposition were excised in post. And the film's attempts to address modern relationship anxieties - commitment phobia, the pressure to couple up, the fear of being left behind - are handled with all the nuance of a sledgehammer, reducing complex emotional territory to greeting-card platitudes.

Perhaps most damningly, the film simply isn't romantic. There's no spark between Dineo and her potential love interests, no crackle of chemistry that might make us root for anyone to end up together. The central friendship - the purported heart of the story - is similarly underbaked. We're told these women are best friends; we rarely feel it. The banter is manufactured, the bickering shrill, the emotional beats mechanical. The 2020 original may have been disposable, but at least it had a certain frisky charm. This sequel feels like a contractual obligation, a film made because a sequel seemed like a good idea rather than because anyone had a story that needed telling.

Pros & Cons

Final Verdict

Seriously Single Too is the kind of sequel that makes you question whether the original was ever as charming as you remember. Ramaphakela and company have assembled a cast of genuinely talented performers and stranded them in a film that has no idea what it wants to be - romantic comedy, friendship drama, or raucous party movie. It fails at all three. The 0.5/10 TMDb rating isn't an exaggeration; it's an accurate reflection of a film that offers nothing new, nothing funny, and nothing worth remembering. Skip this one and revisit the original if you must - at least that one had the decency to be forgettable rather than actively unpleasant.
