Let's be honest about what this is. "Spidey and the Avengers: Halloween Team-Up!" is not aiming for the emotional depth of a Pixar feature or the narrative complexity of a serialized animated series. It's a holiday special designed to be watched once, maybe twice, and then forgotten until next October. That's not a criticism - it's a classification.
What works here works well. The voice cast is genuinely committed. Thiele's Spider-Man is earnest without being cloying, and Blomberg's Stark lands a few decent one-liners that will fly over kids' heads but land for parents. Haim is the standout, chewing scenery as Hallows' Eve with a relish that suggests she understood exactly what kind of movie she was in. Stump, better known as the frontman of Fall Out Boy, brings an unexpected gravitas to Jack O'Lantern.
The animation is bright and fluid, leaning into the holiday aesthetic with orange-purple color palettes and creatively designed magical traps. The action sequences are brisk and inventive, even if they occasionally feel constrained by the episode-length runtime. There's a sense that the creative team had more ideas than time, and a few set pieces end before they fully develop.
The script, however, is where things get thin. The humor leans heavily on puns and slapstick, which is fine for the target demographic but wears thin for anyone over ten. The lesson about teamwork and not letting fear ruin the fun is delivered with the subtlety of a jack-o'-lantern to the face. And the Hallows' Eve motivation - ruining Halloween forever because... she's magical and mean? - is underbaked even by family-film standards.
Still, there's an undeniable charm to the whole affair. It's paced like a sugar rush, the heroes are likable, and the holiday spirit is sincere. At 29 minutes, it never overstays its welcome. The 10/10 TMDb rating is almost certainly a statistical anomaly driven by early voters, but it hints at something real: audiences who watched this had fun.
